It's Christmas time in the City

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in Holiday style
In the air
There is a feeling of Christmas
Children laughing
People passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on every street corner you'll hear

Silver bells silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city....

I am super behind on blogging so I first want to say that I hope you had a very Merry Christmas! I have lots of catching up to do and I hope to do it before the end of the year!

A couple of weekends ago we went to Germany with our friends, Nary and Gerald, to visit the famous Christmas markets. The extent of my Christmas decor is usually the tree so I was excited to start collecting those Christmas trinkets that will be so much fun putting out year after year.

Since there is a direct flight from Aberdeen to Frankfurt, Germany we decided we would use that as our base and travel to Heidelberg one day and Nuremberg another by train.

Our first day was to Heidelberg and before we tackled the markets we took the funicular to the top of the mountain to visit the beautiful Heidelberg Palace, enjoy our first sausage of the trip and cuppa mulled wine.
The funicular!

Sausage and mulled wine time!

After touring the castle and enjoying our delicious German fare, we headed back down to the precious village where we came upon an ice skating rink. Nary and I couldn't resist making a few loops before we started our shopping adventure.

Heidelberg is the perfect little German town and I loved that the markets were spread throughout the city. I didn't hit the jack pot here as far as shopping goes but this was my favorite part of the trip!

Larger than life German pyramid

Saturday we headed to Nuremberg. Nuremberg is known for having the oldest sausage restaurant in the world and most traditional German Christmas market. Naturally, our first stop was to fuel up for a day of shopping.

The sausage is different in each region.
Apfelstrudel for dessert. Yummy!

Nuremberg is a beautiful city and the shopping was great here but the crowds were not. The market is all in one area which means everyone is shopping all in one area. Lot of pushing and shoving to get to the stalls we wanted things from but at the end of the day it was still a fun day and we got lots of loot to show for it!! I highly recommend this market but not on the weekend!
Beautiful Nuremberg

It was a wonderful weekend with great food, great shopping and even greater people. This was a great way to get in the Christmas spirit and I highly recommend you add it to your bucket list. Stay tuned tomorrow for a post on all my goodies!!
